Natural light

natural light

Like in Ando's minimalist architecture, sunlight and skylight should be treated just like any other architectural element. Indeed, governing natural light is essential for a sense of well being, control and balance with nature.

Ambient lighting

ambient lighting

Ambient lighting is a term used to describe the general basic lighting of a particular ambient, which can also be given by the sum of its light sources. It should be uniformly diffused, and set in order to trasmit a particular feeling, such as serenity or tension.

Lamps

lamps

Lamps, together with the fireplace, are probably the oldest light emitting device used by mankind in architecture. Naturally these type of devices, and the associated lighting technique which is called "task lighting", have been improved enormously during the evolution of theatre, architecture and interior design.

Chandeliers

chandeliers

Chandeliers are composed by particular and artistic assemblages of lamps. Obviously an increased number of lamps results as an increase lighting volume. In fact chandeliers were mostly used into larger ambients like palaces rooms and royal courts. Nowadays they still represent wealth and are also used for kitsch revival styles.

Spotlights

spotlights

Largely used in stage and museum design, these types of lights produce the so called "accent lighting", used to drive the sight of the visitor towards a certain point. Indeed, spotlights are often used to emphasize a particular object or a limited space into of an interior or an exterior architecture.

Neon lights

Neon lights

Neon lights are very suggestive, colourful and playful. Moreover they can be bended and used to compose many shapes. As a consequence they are mostly used for decorative and enterntainment tasks. However they also have functional characteristics, like economy and durability.

LED (light emitting diode)

led

The recent introduction of this technology, commercially available in late 1960s, revolutionized lighting design in many aspects. LED lights characteristics make them accountable for every lighting task: very small but possible to group together, highly durable, affordable, low energy consumer, economic and ecologic.

Barrisol

barrisol

Barrisol is a patented lighting technique invented by F.Scherrer. The technique, which gives extraordinary results, is based on a particular synthetic material that has to be tighten and back lighted in order to appear as a lighting surface.

Plain Colours

plain colours

Colours are basically a product of light. If light changes, colours change. If light turns down, colours become darker. It is always important to consider the overall effect of light diffusion and coloured surfaces reflections to have a well balanced and functional global illumination of an ambient.

Colour psychology

colour psychology

Colours are basically what our eyes perceive when material surfaces respond to light exposure. Many studies confirm the human unconscious and instinctive reaction to colours. According to these studies, our brain associates a different meaning to each colour,
causing a particular state of humour.

Coloured surfaces

coloured surfaces

Flat and plain coloured surfaces certainly have an high aesthetic value, as they resemble the modern abstract art. In fact surfaces compositions and colours associations have been used by many modern movements such as Neoplasticism, International Style and later on Minimalism.

Coloured decorations

coloured decorations

Before Modernism revolution there was a high class design tendency of decorating every piece of furniture as well as floors, ceilings and walls with all sorts of artifacts such as gold painted plaster scultures. It is important to know how, just like material colour and bump, also decorations affect in a determined way the diffusion of light.
